They taunt me
Everyday flying by
Leaving me down here
To watch as they
soar across the sky
Weaving through the stars

They are free
They are living
They are my friends
I am trapped
I am dying
I am alone

The waters turned black
The lands became barren
The others left
But I have no wings
So there is nothing left for me
But to dream

To dream that I could leave this ocean
And swim between the stars
To dream that my lungs no longer burn
That my skin and scales do not peel
To dream that my family hasn't died
And that my friends hadn't left

So here I am
On this toxic planet
Here I am
Watching, wishing
To be like the dragons
And not the mermaid that I am.

This is an excellent poem for around Earth Day especially. Reminding us that pollution hurts more than just ourselves. Poor mermaid :(. While the grass only seems greener on the other side most of the time...sometimes that's just not the case. For the record, I think having wings and being able to fly would be awesome, lol. Thanks for joining the contest! I've been reading through everyone's work and it's been very enjoyable.
